AKA: Alisdair Murray and A. Murray

About Illy

Coming out of Melbourne’s Frankston, Alasdair David George Murray, better known by his stage name Illy, is an Australian hip-hop recording artist.

Illy started as a member of the Crooked Eye family, along with Phrase, Daniel Merriweather, M-Phazes, J Skub and Flagrant. He started his career with a two-part mixtape, simply titled “Illy Mixtape”, with part one being released in 2007 and part two the following year. The production was shared between M-Phazes, Skub and Jase Beatheadz.

His first major appearance was on “Before I Leave”, performing alongside Drapht, Patto and Pegz, on Pegz’s album, “Burn City”. He also performed two guest verses on the BBS crew’s mixtape, “3 Mics and We Swear”.

He signed a deal with Pegz’s label, Obese Records, to release his debut album, “Long Story Short”. He enjoyed a great deal of success under the label and worked with a number of Australian MCs, including N'fa, Pez & Purpose, just to name a few.

He left Obese Records following the release of his third album, “Bring It Back”, to set up his own label, ONETWO Records. The reasoning behind it is because he wanted his fourth album to be one to remember.

Just under a month after releasing his fourth album, “Cinematic”, Illy picked up an award for “Bring It Back” being the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA)’s Best Urban Album. This was an ultimate surprise, beating Bliss N Eso’s “Circus In The Sky” album, which held the number one spot on the chart for a week and picked up a gold, and later platinum, certification.

Illy ended up with his own number one album later on in 2016 with his fifth album, “Two Degrees”. The anticipation for the album was heavily built up by two highly successful singles, “Papercuts” and “Catch 22”.
